The wonder of it all – Gloucester, MA

Little C seemed like he could have spent hours just roaming, wondering, and exploring the beach. We practically had it all to ourselves on a gorgeous evening in Gloucester. It took him a minute to get used to the feel of the gritty sand on his feet, but then he was off running. He ran towards the ocean and froze as soon as his little piggies reached the cold water, looking back at his parents and taking delight in his discovery. He was curious about the seaweed, played in tiny tide pools, climbed the rocks, and tossed the ball around with his football-loving dad. It was precious watching him take it all in and in turn, seeing his parents revel in his joy. What a super fun beach session, Alyssa and Mike! Wishing you all a wonderful summer filled with lots of splashing, sand castle-building, and (ever so slightly) sun-kissed cheeks.

Something to celebrate – Natick, MA

I first met the M family back in November and was struck by their tender interactions with one another, the maturity of handsome J and darling K, and how welcome I felt to be a part of it all for our session. I was touched when they contacted me to photograph a party they threw in honor of J’s First Communion. They went all out and hosted a fun-filled affair complete with a giant bounce house and a mega-slide. It was awesome to see J and his sister, K, have a TON of fun with their friends and family.

Cozy and cuddly little one – Sudbury, MA

Sweet baby T is 5 weeks old and her brother and sister seem to be adjusting to the new member of the family just fine. Big sister C seemed to just want to be wherever her baby sister was and big brother W seemed to just go about his business as usual. These two older siblings are a perfect pair of playmates as their parents get used to the new (and also familiar) routines. As for dear mom and dad, it sounds like baby T is doing a wonderful job at making sure they fall in love with her big, gorgeous eyes while simultaneously testing how little sleep they need to function. All told, this family is just as sweet as can be.

Roots Workshop

I wasn’t *exactly* sure what I was getting myself into when I signed up for an intensive photojournalism workshop in Maine, but I knew it was going to be good, really good. A creation of our dear wedding photographer, Emilie Sandifer of emilie, inc., the 5-day Roots Workshop promised to take participants down a path of true photojournalism: learn some basics, receive an assignment, and shoot, shoot, shoot. Oh, and then, as a team of five, go through a critique process that is equally inspiring and depressing, led by an amazing pair of photographers who are in with the best of the best, Tyler Wirken and Rachel LaCour Niesen. Wash, rinse, repeat for day two.

I won’t bore you with the technical pieces of wisdom I gained (though they are invaluable). What I will tell you about is how my eyes started seeing things, people, moments, differently. My fearless leader, Tyler, said it best when he explained that great photography is not just a matter of “having a good eye,” it’s a matter of how your eyes are trained. In addition to all of the photography lessons taught, learned, and yet to be absorbed, I was inspired by the absolutely wonderful people around me. Within hours of my arrival, I felt right at home. I’ve been explaining it as a cross between camp and Top Chef (minus the competitive features): a fun-filled, exhausting, (extremely) humbling, eye-opening, and heart-warming adventure.

My assignment was to do a feature on a family who resides in a very unique community called Bayside in Northport, Maine. With about 300 cottages, the majority of which are seasonal rentals, Bayside is reminiscent of days past where simple was the rule: get outside, enjoy the ones you’re with, and keep what’s truly important at the top of your list. But my story ultimately wasn’t about this quaint village. It turned out that what the community has to offer is best illustrated in the lives of those who decide to live there full time. Jennika and Jay, along with their two children, O and L, allowed me into their home and lives to capture life as they know it. Here is their story.

Jennika and Jay, thank you SO, SO much for opening your home and hearts to me, a complete stranger. Your children are completely wonderful and your parenting is seamless. I’m left with a soft spot in my heart for all of you.

To Emilie, Tyler, Rachel and all of my fellow campers, thank you from the bottom of my heart for your guidance and support. Looking forward to what lies ahead for all of us.

And lastly, thanks to my incredible husband and in-laws who took care of my girls in my absence. Mwah!

Double Time – North Reading, MA

It never fails. Every time I meet someone with twins, I stand back in awe of it all. Yes, I have two kids of my own, but having two kids the same age who go through everything – nursing, teething, not-sleeping-through-the-night, biting, and don’t forget the throwing food on the floor phase – at the same time, it’s a different story. I have the utmost respect for parents of twins. Utmost respect (this goes for my sister, Beth, and my cousin, Kristen, and a good number of wonderful clients).

So it was completely my pleasure to meet parents Naomi and Matt and their adorable twins, little N and B. They are just starting to find their balance, they have delicious smiles, and are clearly loved by their parents. Little N could not have been a happier baby. I loved her little scrunchy face smile. And sweet B was a bit more on the serious side, but just as loveable. We were lucky to have Naomi’s mom join us for the session, too!
